Gỏi Gà 1

Chào các thầy cô và các bạn!

Chúng em là Hoà (Jorene), Sơn (Wei Kang), Long (Wen Huie) và Ánh (Kah Yen). Tuần trước, chúng em nấu Gỏi Gà cho chúng ta ở nhà thây Minh. Chúng em rật vui vì chúng em lần đầu nấu ăn Việt.

The day before the food festival, each of us were tasked to settle different components for preparing the team. Ánh was in charge of buying flowers for decorations, while Long and Sơn had to purchase the ingredients the day before. Hoà settled the ingredients that could only be purchased from the wet market.

On that day, chúng em thức dậy rật sớm để nấu gà. Sau nấu gà, chúng em gặp ở Bukit Panjang LRT lúc mưới giờ kém mưới lăm. Sau đó, chúng em đi nhả thầy Minh.

Here’s our recipe to the HEAVENLY Gỏi Gà:

1 cup shredded carrot
1/2 cup finely pounded peanuts
1/3 cup chopped fresh basil
1/3 cup chopped fresh mint

Steps

1) Place chicken and 1 cup green onions in a medium saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat; let stand 10 minutes. Drain and discard green onions. Shred chicken with 2 forks.

2) Combine juice, sugar, and garlic in a small bowl. Stir in fish sauce and mix well.

3) Combine remaining 1 cup onions, chicken, cabbage, and remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Drizzle with juice mixture and toss well to coat. Cover and let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Reflections:

Hoà: It has been a fun experience in preparing this dish as I have never tasted or even tried cooking any Vietnamese dish before. Cooking is indeed an interesting way to know more about a country’s culture. Sau nấu Gỏi Gà, mình rật vui. I was also quite surprised that a number of the dishes involved the use of different kinds of herbs! In fact, I may even try cooking other Vietnamese dishes on my own! At the end of the day, I still had fun despite my having mid terms in the evening : )

Ánh: Like everyone else, I think that the cooking project has been a very fun experience! The cooking project has definitely lightened my mood for that few hours as I’ve burnt the night studying for a mid-term right after that test. Preparing the food together with all my classmates made us felt like a happy gia đình : ) It was a pity that I couldn’t stay for the food tasting. Looking forward to a similar project in Viet 2!

Sơn: I think it is fun and interesting to have cooking as one of our projects. Through this, we get to learn more about Vietnamese food and able to have a taste of this delicious delicacy. I had never tried Vietnamese food before, but after the project, I hope that we would have more chance to enjoy Vietnamese food together with all the Vietnamese classes. Also, I feel that it is a good time for us to interact together with teachers and classmates. We had joy and fun throughout the event. Overall, it is a good experience for me. Looking forward for more fun in the class!

Long: Tổt quà! Mình ít khi nấu ăn nhưng this time it was really fun to nấu ăn with so many friends! I’m sure our interest in Vietnam has really increased after this cooking session and the memories that we have will stay on with us for life. Maybe next time chúng ta can go for a trip to Vietnam together? (: Looking forward to more such projects!

Tips for future sinh viên tiếng Việt:

1. Arrive early for the Food Festival even if it’s not your allocated time slot; it’ll be fun just seeing how other groups are preparing other dishes after you are done with yours.

2. Do not underestimate the importance of decorating your dish! Some suitable decoration items include lotus (the national flower of Vietnam) and the national flag of Vietnam.

3. Do bring along utensils such as knives, cutting board, grater and a nice looking bowl/plate. Of course, you should arrive with a NICE SMILE : )

Cám ơn các thầy cô for the tips and cám ơn các bạn for trying our wonderful dish!
